Meditation App Usability Testing

Purpose

Personal Neuro Devices developed a mobile meditation application called Transcend and it connects to a NeuroSky’s MindWave Mobile Headset. They wanted to test the effectiveness and usability of their products.

Results

There was a mix of positive and negative experiences that were performed by the testers as well as some thoughtful feedback on mainly the app itself.

Personal Neuro Devices' app and headset read the user's brain activity on whether they are feeling calm or not. The purpose of this is to give users real feedback about the quality and duration of their meditation sessions. It also provides guides and awards to encourage users to continue the whole meditation experience.

My team and I at Algonquin College had the privilege to plan and conduct research on their products. We recruited and scheduled targeted participants, planned and created a test script. There were 6 sessions which were also recorded. The testers chosen followed a step by step guide from beginning to end of pairing the headset to attempting a meditation. Again, same as for my other research projects, I can only share some details including a sneak peek of the report.

Hardware technical issues with some negative feedback of the mobile app

Overall, most participants were not entirely satisfied with the experience from the get-go, as the headband itself had some technical issues in connecting and some users weren't sure if they were wearing it correctly, then the mobile app wasn't very engaging in terms of design and sound but they found it was fairly easy to use.
